Newport is an Age Friendly City
“Newport is now a member of the World Health Organisation’s global network for age friendly cities and communities.
A steering committee, including representatives of the council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, third sector and community groups, was set up to support and drive the ambition of Newport becoming an age friendly city.” (Newport City Council, 2024)
Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, said: “Joining the Network will provide opportunities to learn from other cities, communities and organisations throughout the world, and will also enable Newport to highlight and showcase the action they are delivering to support older people to age well on a global stage.”
Dementia Support
Do you know someone with Dementia?
What is Dementia?
According to the Alzheimer’s Society the word dementia describes a group of symptoms that includes memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language, and often changes in mood, perception or behaviour which affect daily life.
Dementia is caused when a disease damages nerve cells in the brain. Dementia can be caused by many different diseases. These diseases affect the brain in different ways, resulting in different types of dementia. A person’s symptoms depend on the disease causing the dementia and which parts of their brain are affected.
