Training Opportunities

As community groups grow and diversify they are supporting more people than ever.  This section highlights some of the training opportunities that are available for members of the public and community groups and leaders.

MELO

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Public Health team have secured funding to make available a large number of suicide awareness training courses, for free, to anyone who works in our local area.

The training courses: Suicide First Aid, have been funded by a local charity: the Ted Senior Foundation, and they will be delivered by locally experienced trainers. Most of the courses are available online but face to face courses are also available.

We would appreciate it if you could share this information within your organisations and with your colleagues and encourage them to take up this offer. We would like everyone to feel more confident to have conversations with people who may be experiencing suicidal feelings and know where they can access more information and support.

For more information on the training and to book a place please follow the link to the relevant page on Melo: Mental Wellbeing Courses | Melo Self-help Resources and Support

Thank you. Jackie Williams, Senior Public Health Practitioner, ABUHB Public Health Team – Jackie.williams6@wales.nhs.uk

MECC: Making Every Contact Count

“It is not easy for everyone to raise questions about lifestyle behaviours. MECC requires a range of skills and knowledge in order for staff to gain confidence to support and direct people. Training resources for staff are a key element of a MECC programme.

The success of our MECC programme will depend on the quality of the training and on sustaining the competence and confidence of staff to deliver the key messages and information to the public. It is also important that those delivering MECC are able to signpost people to appropriate local services and where possible facilitate contact with these services. “(Public Health Network, 2024)

Volunteering Matters - Skill Share

Do you or anyone you know have a skill or interest you could share with others? Or do you (or a group your involved with) have something you’ve always wanted to learn but haven’t had the chance? We are looking for volunteers and participants for an exciting new project in Newport.

Volunteering Matters’ Skills Share project in Newport, aims to match volunteers who have skills they’d like to share with others who are interested in learning this skill. The sessions will be fun and enjoyable and promote inter-generational working.

If you (or someone you know) has a skill they’d like to share, get in touch. It could be anything from playing a musical instrument or arts and crafts to local history or cookery and healthy eating – no skill is too niche, and there’ll be someone interested and grateful to learn. All volunteers will be fully supported at all times. It’s a great chance to use your skills and interests to benefit others in your local community.

Likewise, if you are involved with a group who’d be interested in learning something new, get in touch – newport@volunteeringmatters.org.uk. We’d love to chat with you about what interests you, and how we can help.
