Menopause Advice and Support

“The menopause refers to that time in every woman’s life when her periods stop and her ovaries lose their reproductive function.

Usually, this occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but in a few exceptional cases, women may become menopausal in their 30s, or even younger. This is then known as a premature menopause, or premature ovarian insufficiency.

The menopause is influenced by a change in hormone levels. As women get older, their store of eggs in the ovary decreases and their ability to conceive diminishes. At this time, less oestrogen is produced, causing the body to behave differently.

The process can even take several years, during which symptoms arise gradually. This gradual change is called the ‘peri-menopause’. At around the age of 50-55 years, the monthly cycle stops completely – so no more ovulations, no more periods and no more pregnancies. This is the menopause.” (ABUHB, 2024)

Meno Active is a range of targeted classes for pre to post-menopausal women who want to take back some control, be supported, and gain insightful tips and combat myths.

You may have found that the exercise routine you have enjoyed for many years no longer works, your energy levels lag, your temperature fluctuates, and you’re trying to navigate brain fog. Whilst lower oestrogen levels may have resulted in decreased bone mass and insulin resistance, causing weight gain and loss of strength which has impacted your sense of identity, confidence and well-being.

Meno Active encompasses all things to do with the menopausal changes and offers exercise, nutrition and well-being advice to help you understand what’s happening to the body during these years and provide helpful solutions and guidance in a supportive group environment.

Mental health can be affected at menopause. Mood changes such as feeling low, anxious, irritable and/or tearful are common. Fluctuating progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone levels can be responsible for many psychological symptoms including panic, anxiety and poor concentration.

Our self-help resources provide information on how the menopause affects mental health and advice on how you can manage symptoms.

Most women will experience symptoms of menopause, and many are able to carry on their life as normal, discussing any issues with their manager at work while continuing with their career. However in some cases, symptoms may be debilitating and have a significant impact on everyday activities. DWP’s 50Plus Choices offer is designed to support both groups of women, and everyone going through the menopause.
