Older Persons Services

“Newport is now a member of the World Health Organisation’s global network for age friendly cities and communities.

A steering committee, including representatives of the council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, third sector and community groups, was set up to support and drive the ambition of Newport becoming an age friendly city.” (Newport City Council, 2024)

Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, said: “Joining the Network will provide opportunities to learn from other cities, communities and organisations throughout the world, and will also enable Newport to highlight and showcase the action they are delivering to support older people to age well on a global stage.”

Advice and Assistance Team

The Commissioner’s Advice and Assistance Team can help to connect you with support and services throughout Wales and help to ensure your rights are upheld.

The team can provide you with help and support if:

  • You are aged 60+
  • You live in Wales
  • You have been experiencing problems with services, such as health, social care, community services or housing
  • You have questions about your rights
  • You can also get in touch on behalf of an older person, such as a family member or friend if they are facing issues or difficulties.

The Commissioner’s Team will take some details from you so they can investigate your concerns and identify the best way to resolve your issues. In some cases, this might mean referring you to a partner organisation that is better placed to help.

TOVEY Bros

The course is with a maximum of 15 people, and each week we discuss the steps of bereavement. It is private and a safe environment. It is up to the individual if they want to sit and just listen, or participate.

We also do a coffee morning at the Ridgeway Community Hall – The coffee morning has come about due to the people that attended the courses becoming friends, and didn’t want to part. The coffee morning is a walk in, so to speak.
