Sexual Health
Sexual and Reproductive Health
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Sexual and Reproductive Health service provides confidential advice, support and treatment for contraception, sexual health concerns and sexually transmitted infections. Services include contraception, STI testing and treatment, emergency contraception, HIV and other blood-borne virus testing, and support for young people.
Appointments are available through clinics across Gwent, with services tailored to individual needs. People can contact the sexual health triage team to discuss their requirements and arrange an appropriate appointment.
Sexual Health Clinics
Sexual health clinics offer a range of services to support a range of sexual health needs. The clinics will offer support, testing and treatment and may refer onward if needed.
Appointments will be available at the different hubs throughout the health board area, but please note that not all sites can provide the same level of care so your appointment may be limited by what you require.
For more information about clnic locations, please visit the service website – Aneurin Bevan University Health Board – Sexual and Reproductive Health. Please do not attend these centres if you do not have an appointment.
Standard Operating Procedure for Test and Post (TAP) Service
The Test and Post (TAP) Service was introduced in Wales in 2020 as a pilot to support continued access to STI testing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The service uses online ordering and postal delivery of testing kits for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Results are texted to individuals with direction for sexual health clinical treatment as required. The Test and Post Service is available to individuals aged 16 and over in Wales.
Access to Test and Post kits across communities in Gwent, particularly through the Intimacy with Ageing project, will encourage regular testing of STIs and reduce stigma around testing of STIs and blood borne viruses (BBVs) such as HIV. It also provides an opportunity to improve education around sexual health and knowledge of local sexual health services; in line with the Intimacy with Ageing project’s goals and objectives.
Older People in Care Homes:
Sex, Sexuality and Intimate Relationships
This Royal College of Nursing guidance explores sex, sexuality and intimate relationships among older people living in care homes. It highlights the importance of recognising sexuality as a normal part of life and supporting residents’ rights to privacy, dignity, choice, intimacy and relationships, while taking account of individual circumstances, capacity and the rights of others.
The document provides practical guidance for care staff on creating inclusive environments, overcoming barriers and stigma, discussing sexual health sensitively, and responding appropriately to concerns, safeguarding issues and questions around mental capacity. It also covers relevant legal and professional responsibilities, policies and good practice, with case examples to help staff navigate complex situations.
