Participatory Budgeting
Participatory Budgeting or PB is a process where a pot of money is made available for community groups to bid for a share of. They are then invited to an event, where they can present their projects to members of the community. The community then vote for the projects they wish to be awarded the funding.
Newport City Council have adopted a PB approach to funding allocation as a way to facilitate community empowerment, participation and increase social capital within the city. A steering group including Newport City Council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO) and members of the community facilitate the application and event planning.

Raising Hope
Well Being Event
The two day event encouraged applications from community projects to provide support for women’s, children’s and young people emotional well being or combating loneliness and isolation. The available fund for this event was £130,000, funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and support from the Neighbourhood Care Networks in Newport.

This event encouraged applications from community projects that provide support to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and/or their family and carers. The available fund for this event was £40,000, funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
